Paul Chapman - Wood Craft Artisan
Having originally trained as a musical instrument maker, working on oboes and clarinets made in exotic hardwoods, I branched out into sculpture eight years ago.
I describe myself as a ‘wood craft artisan’ and have a great respect for wood and its sustainability. Where possible I source my wood from reclaimed timber yards and off-cut bins and re-work it by cutting and expanding it with coloured resins to contrast and complement its natural colour. I am constantly experimenting with new techniques and ways of stretching the wood beyond its original dimensions.
I am inspired by jazz music, boats and the hollow form.
